Playing without Hardik Pandya (groin trouble), table-toppers Gujarat chased CSK’s 169 with three wickets and a ball to spare in an IPL game at Gahunje stadium here on Sunday night.

Left-hander David Miller (94, 51b, 8x4s, 6x6s) was the hero of the day. They needed 52 off four overs. Dwayne Bravo conceded just four runs in the 17th over to make the task harder: 48 needed off 3 overs. Then pacer Chris Jordan was taken for 25 runs which tilted the scale in Gujarat’s way. Bravo then took two wickets (Rashid and Alzarri Joseph) for 10 runs in the penultimate over to end on 3 for 23 in his four including a wicket maiden. But it was too late and Miller controlled the climax.

The Miller carnage included a swatted six at the end. But the platform was set with fours and sixes in the V followed by lusty blows square off the wicket. The fancy T20 shots were almost absent.

Rashid hit Jordan’s wayward ball over extra cover for six and followed it with a couple of more boundaries, first a straight one followed by square off the wicket. The momentum changed there.

Gujarat were 48-4 after eight overs. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who was taken for 19 runs in the 12th over, introduced Bravo as late as the 13th. And he didn’t disappoint. First, a wicket maiden (got Tewatia) and then two brilliant slower balls outside the off stump as dots to marauding left-handed batter Miller.
Earlier, a rollicking stand of 92 runs in 9.1 overs for the third wicket between Ruturaj Gaikwad (73 runs, 48b, 5x4s, 5x6s) and Ambati Rayudu (46 runs, 31b, 4x4s, 2x6s) took CSK to 169-5.
CSK were 32-2 in the sixth over. After being 124-2 in the 15th over, they couldn’t end with a flourish. They went 32 balls without a boundary after the 13th over.
