Batting great Sunil Gavaskar is of the opinion that Punjab Kings may have revamped their squad but they still lack an impact player in their team and that’s why he is not sure if they will be able to win their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title this year. Notably, The Punjab Kings are one of the only three franchises (among the original 8) yet to lift the IPL title.

PBKS have been one of the biggest underachievers in the history of the IPL. However, with a power-packed squad, PBKS have it in them to reach the top 4 this season. All eyes will be on head coach Anil Kumble and his combination with Mayank Agarwal as the duo will be under pressure to deliver.

“Punjab Kings is one of those teams who are yet to win the title. This time, I don’t think they have an impact player in the team they have built. On the other hand, though, this could also benefit the side. When there are very low expectations, there is very less pressure,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

PBKS retained just two players in Mayank and Arshdeep Singh, as they went for a complete overhaul. They bought back the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Harpreet Brar and roped in Jonny Bairstow, Shikhar Dhawan, Liam Livingstone and Odean Smith at the mega auction. PBKS look a strong side on paper and it remains to be seen if they can translate all the talent and firepower in the squad into performances.

“When the pressure is less, the players are more free in their approach. In that aspect, I think Punjab Kings can surprise a few. Will they win the trophy? I doubt that. See, this is a T20 format and you have to be in that consistent cycle of winning,” Gavaskar added.

Punjab Kings will open their IPL 2022 campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 27.
