There was an interview that was posted by RCB recently, wherein Virat Kohli shared how he has a special bond with former teammate AB de Villiers, who announced his retirement last year, and how he has played an important role in his career. A glimpse into the life of players off-the-pitch is very popular amongst the fans.

Even Faf du Plessis said that his captaincy will be a “collaborative approach”, adding that Kohli is one of the most respected leaders of the game.

“Virat Kohli, just not for RCB but also for the international game, he is one of the most respected leaders of the game. Huge respect for what he has done with the bat in his hand but also from a captaincy perspective. He has changed Indian cricket and I have seen that over time, playing against India. I could see that leadership footprint in the Indian team. A competitive, fit team that was fighting fire with fire,” Faf du Plessis said.

“He has got an extremely strong leadership style. That is something that we will still need even if he is not being the captain, that energy that he brings to himself and also for the team is hugely important for us. So like that, we will try and use that as best as we can.”

We have also DK (Dinesh Karthik), (Glenn) Maxwell and Harshal (Patel). There are so many players with experience. The important part is having clarity. That’s where my responsibility comes in.” du Plessis added.

Royal Challengers Bangalore started the tournament with a defeat at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, after chasers Punjab Kings achieved the target of 205 runs, thanks to cameos from all-rounder Odean Smith and batter Shahrukh Khan.

RCB had a great first innings with captain Faf du Plessis scoring 88 from 57 deliveries and Birat Kohli getting 41 from 29. But they could not stop the Kings from chasing the 200+ target as Mohammed Siraj proved to be the most expensive, giving away a massive 59 runs in 4 overs with an economy rate of 14.75, but he took two wickets, from Bhanuka Rajapaksa (43 off 22) and ducked Raj Bawa.

However, RCB came back stronger in their second game, when they beat last season’s runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders by 3 wickets with 4 balls remaining as they chased down a relatively small target of 128 runs at the same venue. Wanindu Hasaranga was the star for RCB with figures of 4 for 20 off his 4 overs, which ensured a low scoring innings for Shreyas Iyer’s men.

Mohammed Siraj dismissed KKR opener Ajinkya Rahane for just 9 runs, but the bowler gave away 25 runs in 4 overs with an economy rate of 6.25. Captain Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli were also dismissed early, scoring just 17 runs off 11 balls between them. It was the unbeaten duo of Dinesh Karthik (14 off 7) and Harshal Patel (10 off 6) who ensured the win for RCB.

Royal Challengers Bangalore sit in 6th place in the IPL table, with 2 points and will face the high-flying Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday.
