There was very little surprise when Jos Buttler became the first centurion of IPL 2022 as the England batter pummeled the Mumbai Indians bowling unit in Match 9 of the season at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Buttler smashed his 2nd IPL hundred in just 66 balls as he put the MI bowling attack to the sword after Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat.

Jos Buttler, playing his 300th T20 match on Saturday, became only the 16th batter in the history of IPL to hit more than 1 hundred. He emulated Ben Stokes by becoming the 2nd England batter after Ben Stokes to do so.

Buttler hit 6 huge sixes and 11 boundaries for his 68-ball 100 as Rajasthan Royals posted 193 for 8 on the board in 20 overs. Following Buttler’s departure, Rajasthan lost an array of wickets and managed just 11 runs in the last 2 overs but managed to post a strong total, thanks to the England batter’s blitz.

Notably, Buttler had hit his first hundred in the IPL against SunRisers Hyderabad in Delhi. The 64-ball 124 blitz was also the explosive England star’s first hundred in T20 cricket. Buttler was also the first centurion of the T20 World Cup in the UAE last year.

It was no surprise that Rajasthan retained Jos Buttler for Rs 11 crore ahead of the mega auction. The England star began his season with a 28-ball 35 against the SRH before going bonkers against Mumbai.

Jos Buttler showed no signs of holding back even as Rajasthan Royals lost their opener Yashavi Jaiswal early with Jasprit Bumrah striking in his first over. Buttler was cautious against Bumrah but he launched into Basil Thampi, one of the weak links of a rather ordinary-looking Mumbai Indians bowling unit in IPL 2022.

Buttler hit Thampi for 3 sixes and 2 boundaries in the 4th over, leaving captain Rohit Sharma worried. Buttler’s blitz helped Rajasthan post 48 on the board at the end of the powerplay despite losing two wickets.

Buttler and Samson took some time after the powerplay before changing gears and switching into turbo mode.

Buttler and Samson added 82 runs for the 3rd wicket as they launched into the likes of Murugan Ashwin, Kieron Pollard and Daniel Sams in the middle-overs.

However, Buttler had to play 2nd fiddle to Shimron Hetmyer who took on the charge and hammered 35 from just 14 balls. Buttler got to his hundred in the 19h over before getting undone by a Jasprit Bumrah Yorker.
